Course Content (Syllabus)
Knowledge of social systems and human behavior, individual or collective, is reflected on the theories we develop in the social sciences, which are grounded on empirical research. However, in the modern continuously changing world and with the accelerating evolution of Knowledge, one wonders whether the existing theories can describe, interpret and ultimately predict this evolution of social reality. The content of the present course focuses on the nature of the Theory and the Research Methodology of the real / empirical world in relation to the underlying epistemological assumptions.
The theoretical and methodological landscapes in social sciences are fragmented, that is, many theories and many methodologies co-exist, while no consensus among social scientist is observed. This makes the field difficult to understand and affects negatively the development of a unified framework. This course critically examines the main methodological approaches to social science research, as well as their conceptual end epistemological structures. The participants will have the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of what research methodology is for the social sciences and how to build bridges among the various fields by developing interdisciplinary approaches in human system research.
