Learning Outcomes
- They have acquired a clear picture of archives and in particular literary archives (definitions, historical overview, international and Greek examples, evolution)
- They have become familiar with two important literary archives, those of D. Solomos and K. Cavafy
- They have learned basic scientific approaches and methods for the study of archives and their aspects (e.g. materiality, writing, content)
- They have deepened their understanding of a key international theoretical approach and editorial method, genetic criticism & genetic editing
- Have practiced hands-on engagement with specific literary archival documents/texts, critical study and editorial presentation
- Have become familiar with the changes that the digital condition signals for literary archives and the technologies involved in their management

Course Content (Syllabus)
In its 13 weekly sessions, the course plans to explore three related concepts that lie at the core of the reading and study of literature: the concept of the literary archive, the literary text, and the publication of a literary work. Aspects of materiality, palaeographic reading and interpretation, editorial theory and practice, interaction with the reader, the relationship between the archive and society, and the concept of the archive in the digital condition are examined.
Some of the key issues to be addressed are : the concept of the archive, with a focus on literary archives. What is the archive? What is the historical trajectory of the concept? What principles govern the classification of an archive? What are the importance, function, types of archives and their characteristics? What questions can the study of it answer? How does the study of a work differ from the author's working manuscripts and its study from publications? What do the archives of writers show us about their works and their personalities? Is writing related to the character of the writer and the flow of writing related to the moment? What can deletions and additions during the editing of a work reveal about the author's intentions? In what ways can an archive be presented editorially? What is the author-reader and author-editor relationship through the archive? How is the archive being re-marketed in the digital age?
Examples are drawn from archives of Greek and foreign writers (e.g. Solomos, Cavafy, Seferis, Beckett, Dickinson, Whitman), from the Literary Archive of the Department of Modern and Comparative Greek Studies and from Europeana.

Student Assessment
Description
Seminar members undertake and prepare three oral presentations (bibliography, case study, work on a literary manuscript) and undertake to prepare a short written paper as a follow-up to the third oral presentation.
