Upon successful completion of the course, students: (a) Will have acquired basic theoretical knowledge concerning the psychodynamic approach in conceptualizing psychological difficulties (b) Will have acquired basic knowledge regarding the psychodynamic formulation (c) will have acquired basic knowledge regarding how therapeutic change is conceptualized from a psychodynamic perspective (d) will know the basic principles of the psychotherapy frame (e) will have acquired basic knowledge regarding the role and the interventions of the therapist in psychodynamic therapy (f) will have become familiar with the concept of the unconscious and its role in psychological functioning and in communication

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims to introduce students to the main principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy. The course will focus on the main psychodynamic approaches to psychological functioning and to therapeutic change, as well as on issues concerning the practice of psychodynamic therapy. Specifically, we will discuss the main models of mental life and of change within psychoanalytic theory (insight, working through, corrective emotional experience), the principles of psychodynamic interviewing, psychodynamic formulation, the therapeutic contract and other issues that relate to the therapeutic frame, the therapeutic relationship (‘real’ relationship, working alliance, transference/ countertransference), the role of unconscious communication, symbolism and dreams in psychodynamic therapy, the main therapist interventions, defences and resistance to therapy, termination of therapy, common clinical dilemmas and ethical issues. The course consists of theoretical lectures, discussion of scientific articles and books and the discussion of clinical material.
