Course Content (Syllabus)
The areas of Kastoria, Meteora and Patmos are three of the most popular religious tourism destinations due to the important pilgrimage interest they present for Christianity, and their unique natural environment. The spirituality of these areas and the way it evolved during the past centuries, as well as the relationship between them will be examined during this course. The main components of their natural environment will also be discussed. Additionally, the general relation of sacred sites with the natural environment and the role they play in its protection will be highlighted, with a special focus on the relation between the Orthodox Christian Church and ecology. Finally, examples of the way religious communities manage the natural environment that surrounds them will be analyzed and the problems which emerge from the tourist load will be identified.
