Learning Outcomes
The aim of this course is to familiarize postgraduate students with certain basic trends in social theory, in connection with the understanding and evaluation of the methodological and research principles they propose for the study of social phenomena. From this point of view, the course examines some general interpretations of social totality in relation to specific perceptions about the social determination of knowledge and issues concerning the relationship between the emerging "knowledge society" and education, in relation with the problems, contradictions and prospects arising from this relationship. By the end of the course postgraduate students are expected to be familiar with the methodological and research principles of basic currents in social theory to be able to critically reflect on the different ideological statements regarding the knowledge society and education, using the critical traditions of social theory to be able to understand the social determination of the changes in the processes of creation and transmission of knowledge

Criticism of instrumental reason and the culture industry Poststructuralism and postmodernism Lyotard's theory of knowledge and education in the postmodern condition Knowledge and power in Foucault's work The theories of "post-industrial society" and " knowledge society" Knowledge and education in the light of the main contradictions and perspectives of social development
