Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will know the characteristics of the learning and language difficulties of students with special educational needs, the appropriate teaching strategies and methods of learning foreign languages and they will be able to design and carry out individualised teaching programs for these students in the foreign language.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The aim of this course is to teach students about the education of students with special educational needs in general, but also specifically in terms of learning a second / foreign language. More specifically, they will learn to set educational goals, they will be taught foreign language learning practices for each category of educational needs and they will learn to take into account linguistic and cognitive factors in order to meet the specialised needs of each student with a disability. The sections of the course are summarized as follows:
Educational goals and planning of interventions in the learning environment of special education
Special education in second / foreign language learning: how it is applied and how it is differentiated
Linguistic and cognitive factors in bilingual education and in the learning of foreign languages in special education
Language interventions for students with special educational needs
Cognitive interventions in memory, attention, executive functions and visual-spatial skills disorders
Learning a foreign language in special learning difficulties - dyslexia
Teaching a foreign language to people with speech and language disorders
Effective Practices in Teaching Foreign Languages to Children with Mental Retardation
Teaching strategies for learning foreign languages for children with autism spectrum disorder
Differentiated and multi-sensory teaching of a foreign language to students with hearing problems
Teaching applications with the use of new technologies in foreign language learning in students with learning and language difficulties
