Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, students will: - know the music book Heirmologion and its evolution during the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine period. Also, the short and slow part of the Heirmologion will be studied with corresponding musical examples. - learn historical facts about the post-Byzantine composers, Panagiotes the New Chrysaphes, Archbishop Germanos Bishop of New Patras, Iakovos Protopsaltis, Petros Labadarios and Chourmouzios Chartofylax, composers of the Sticherarion of the post-Byzantine period. - practice on Sticherarion.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The music book Heirmologion as it evolved during the Byzantine and Post-Byzantine period will be presented. Also, the short and slow part of the Heirmologion will be studied in the eight modes. Furthermore, there will be a presentation of the Sticherarion of the post-Byzantine period with compositions by Panagiotis Chrysaphes, Germanos Bishop of New Patras, Iakovos Protopsaltis, Petros Labadarios and Chourmouzios Chartofylax. 1.Heirmologion as music manuscript of 18th-19th century, Petros Peloponnesios (1778) and Petros Byzantios (1808). – 2.The ''short'' Heirmologion - The formula of the short melody as a structural ele-ment. 3.The "slow" Heirmologion: A’ The Byzan-tine Heirmologion (for 14th – 15th centu-ries). Heirmologion in the 17th century: Theofanis Karykis, Panagiotes the New Chrysaphes, Germanos Bishop of New Patras, Kosmas Iviritis. 4.The Heirmologion of Balasis the priest. - The Heirmologion of Petros Peloponne-sios. - The formula of the slow melody as a structural element. 5.Theory and Practice with short Heirmologion: A’ The "first" modes α’ and plagal a’ B’ The "fourth" modes δ΄and plagal δ΄ C’ The "third" modes γ’ and grave D’ The "second" modes β΄ and plagal β΄ 6.The Anastasimatarion as part of Byzan-tine Sticherarion. 7.The Anastasimatarion of Panagiotes the New Chrysaphes with ''ornamenting'' (second half of the 17th century). 8.The formula of the slow Sticherarion as a structural element. 9.The Anastasimatarion of Petros Peloponnesios, as a ‘‘new slow’’ Sticherari-on. 10.Theory and Practice with Sticherarion: A’ The "first" modes α’ and plagal a’ B’ The "fourth" modes δ΄and plagal δ΄ C’ The "third" modes γ’ and grave D’ The "second" modes β΄ and plagal β΄ 11.The sticheron idiomelon of Panagiotes the New Chrysaphes and Ger-manos Bishop of New Patras with ''or-namenting'' and ''novel formula'' (sec-ond half of the 17th century). 12.The detachment of the Doxastic idiome-lon from Sticherarion and the formation of the "Doxastario" code.
