Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to describe the historical and ecclesiastical context that was formed in the Hegemony of Samos during the period 1834-1915 in the context of the relations between the Hegemony and the local Church. They will be analyse the relations that led to specific ecclesiastical and hegemonic policies. Finally, they will be also to understand the meaning of these relations and how they affected the life of the island of Samos as a whole

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the historical context of the relations of the local Church of Samos, as it was formed within the Principality of Samos from 1834 to 1915. It focuses on the peculiar operating status of the ecclesiastical institutions of Samos, the position of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, and the historical problems created by the various archpriests and rulers of Samos and the position of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The historical juxtaposition and evaluation of the formed relations is studied and analyzed in the light of the sources through the Principal Historical Archive of Samos.

2. The creation of the Hegemony of Samos. Historical presentation.
3. The local Church of Samos. Historical elements of the church.
4. Rulers of Samos and their ecclesiastical policy.
5. Formation of Rulers-Metropolitan Relations in Samos 1834-1854
6. The evolution of the relations between the Sovereigns and the Metropolitans of Samos 1855-1915
7. The position of the Ecumenical Patriarchate
8. Legislative texts and provisions of the Hegemony
9. The status of the monasteries of Samos
10. Research and evaluation of the effects of the ecclesiastical legislation of the Greek state on the relevant texts of the Hegemony
11. Case study and analysis of relevant sources I.
12. Case study and analysis of sources II
13. Overall historical assessment of the relations between the Church and the Dominion in Samos
