Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able (a) to recognize basic, distinct features of literary texts (prose) in relation to features of journalistic reportage and historical study, (b) to deal with issues concerning the points of convergence and divergence between literature, journalism and history, (c) to argue on the non-fiction literature’s history, genre, and the aesthetics, (d) to analyze literary texts in relation to texts of journalism and history, and finally (e) to comment on the literary aspects of journalistic and historical texts.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the history and characteristics of non-fiction literature in a comparative perspective examining literature, history, and journalism. In a first part, the literary aspects of the historical narrative and the meeting points of literature and history are examined through the study and discussion of specific examples. In a second part, the literary aspects of journalistic narratives (mainly reportage) and the meeting points of literature and journalism are examined through the study and discussion of specific examples. The corpus of texts mainly consists of non-literary fiction narratives.
