Course Content (Syllabus)
The course takes as a point of departure the biblical testimonies about Paul's visit to various cities of Greece that are still places of pilgrimage (e.g. Philippi, Thessaloniki, Beroea, Athens, Corinth, and Patmos). Besides historical sources, students will also study other texts of non-Christian or apocryphal literature and will investigate how this data can be understood from the perspective of cultural memory. Furthermore, artefacts and archaeological sites that are of relevance will also be discussed in order a) to reconstruct the cultural and historical context of early Christianity and the apostles, and b) to trace down how these monuments receive and reflect the historical memory of a Christian past. During the course, the innovative theological and social message of Paul to the inhabitants of these cities will be highlighted. In the course, visual material and digital technology as well as ancient texts will be used. Students will also be provided with substantial bibliographic information, historical timelines and geographical and topographic data that can be useful when planning tours to these places of pilgrimage.

Description
- Participation in the course meetings and preparation of the assigned material (30% of the final grade)
- Written assignment on a topic related to the course. The topics will be announced on the webpage on moodle. The written assignment must conform to the rules of a written essay (70% of the final grade)
