Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to design an integrated muscle strengthening training program, tailored to the needs of each trainee, using resistance equipment and special resistance training equipment.

Course Content (Syllabus)
1) Introduction to the subject: Historical review of strength training. The relationship between strength training and fitness and the benefits to the practitioner. Time required for a complete workout and taking a history from the trainee. 2) General muscle strengthening training topics. Terminology and familiarity with free weights and machines or special resistance equipment used in strength training by the student. Safety of those exercising with weights and possible injuries. Trainee behaviour in the gym. 3) Secondary training issues: Topics such as warm-up before the resistance training session, recovery after the session, aerobic exercise needed between sessions, and stretching during and at the end of the session are analysed. 4) Key training themes: The key elements of strength training for muscle strengthening are analysed, including: Correct standing and sitting positions during training, correct lifting of weights from the floor and correct breathing during exercises. Muscle strengthening exercises are taught, the exercises are categorised and the criteria for their selection in each training session are established. The correct technique of exercises and repetitions will be analysed. The sets and optimal number of sets required for each exercise are described. The principles on which the design of strength training is based are described. 5) Design of muscle strengthening programmes: The objectives to be set according to the level and specific needs of the trainees are analysed and the appropriate tests and exams to be taken by the trainees are suggested. Indicative programmes and appropriate advice are given for different types of trainees such as: beginners, intermediate, advanced, children, teenagers, women, elderly, athletes, home training, travel and holiday training. Programs are analysed to target muscle hypertrophy, muscle definition and muscle strength. Finally, in consultation with the instructor, the students will create their own programmes and present them to all their peers for the best possible evaluation of the knowledge gained from the course.

Description
Students will be assessed as follows 1) In each course, by their participation and general attitude to the issues presented. 2) By the assignments they are required to complete and also to teach their fellow students, 3) By the major paper they are required to complete at the end of the semester, and 4) By their performance in the final examination of the course.
