Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to
• become familiar with the modern methodologies of serious academic research
• develop research skills through the use of various auxiliary disciplines (e.g. Sigillography, Epigraphy, Diplomatics, Prosopography, Historical Geography)
• become familiar with the various kinds of sources (not only Greek ones)
• practice criticism of sources (not only literary ones)
• learn to distinguish between the different kinds of academic (written) work (not only in Greek and English language)
• learn to compose and to present written assignments systematically according certain rules)
• become familiar with the academic ethics of scholarly writing (no plagianism!; mention the used bibliography)
• to shape a plan for teaching
• to reflect upon teaching methods (of their own and others’) already for the presentation of your results

Course Content (Syllabus)
The sources of history and criticism of charters. Critical use of the different genres of historical sources (not only literary sources in Greek language), taking in to account their partiality prejudice, lack of control of official announcements, respect to ruling persons or even flattery, second-hand-information etc. Discern the weakness of some editions of special sources and still more of modern research based on that. Information about digital sources and bibliography. Training in the new methodologies and a coherent reference system avoiding any kind of plagiarism. Recognize progressive or erroneous hypothesis in modern bibliography Composing and presentation methods. Bibliography and reference systems. Visits to the Centre for Byzantine Research, Society for Macedonian Studies, Museum of Byzantine Culture.

Student Assessment
Description
The evaluation takes into account:
- active and consistent participation during lessons (meaningful attendance, active involvement in discussion posing and answering questions, commenting)
- attendance during the collaboration hours with the teacher
- the student's performance during the oral presentation of their work
- the quality of the written essay (use of adequate bibliography, sufficient documentation and consistent system of references, coherent text structure, correct expression without syntactic and grammatical errors).
Greater weight is given to the quality of the written essay submitted.
