Course Content (Syllabus)
Archives make sense―in (and from) the past and future, society and law, art and science. Beyond all images of dusty preservation, the archive emerges as a contemporary and highly significant concept and process. Its relevance lies, on the one hand, in the establishment of 'originary power': Jacques Derrida reminds us that archē denotes both a historical beginning and an institutional command. On the other hand, archiving is a flexible cultural technique with many faces, constantly dependent on new (material/virtual) spaces and media.
This is why our course explores the archive in two ways: as an abstract concept and through its numerous concrete realizations. We will engage with a variety of media (print, photography, film, digital resources) and archived objects (legal documents, war memories, plant seeds, human voices) to gain insights into the workings of the archive as a reservoir of history and a power machine―through late antique bestiaries and those of the Anthropocene, through the registers of colonialism, through identification and surveillance databases, ecological repositories (Svalbard Seed Vault), through urban spaces around 1900 (from Venice to Berlin) and refugee camps around 2000, and finally with all those archives that do not exist, but should…
