Course Content (Syllabus)
This is an introductory course to the inter-disciplinary field that combines Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing with Humanities and social sciences. The course is organized into the following units: 1. Introduction: Language Technology in Digital Humanities and Social Sciences: objectives, applications, principles, and methods 2. Natural Language Processing: Principles, methods, and downstream tasks 3. Digital Libraries, and Text Collections: Digitization, Documentation, Standardization, Reusability, and Interoperability 4. Corpus Annotation 5. Linguistic Resources and Linked Language Data 6. Natural Language Processing and research in Linguistics: language documentation, Lexicology and Lexicography, neology and language change 7. Information Extraction and Cultural Heritage: management and promotion of cultural assets 8. Emotion and Sentiment Analysis 9. Argumentation and propaganda detection, opinion mining, and identification of toxic language 10. Language Technology and society: Natural Language Processing and social media analysis 11. Language Technology and Creative Industries 12. Ethical and legal issues 13. Presentation of student projects.
