Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1) Understand and evaluate the shape and dimensions of the Earth as a celestial body 2) Explain and interpret topographic and geological maps, their cartographic projections, and the Projection Systems used in the construction of maps of Greece 3) Define and describe the principles of topographic surveying 4) Observe, utilize, and interpret digital and digitized aerial photographs 5) Create digital geological maps 6) Search for, select, and utilize digital databases of cartographic and geological data 7) Define basic concepts of Geography in order to be able to teach them in secondary education 8)Recognize and correlate maps with the physical reality 9) Develop orientation skills 10) Operate instruments and equipment related to the field of Geography

Course Content (Syllabus)
• Introduction. History of Geography. Branches of Geography. Geography and new technologies. • Fundamental geographical concepts (geospatial data and information, scale, measurements, accuracy and reliability of measurements, errors). • Earth as a celestial body. The shape and dimensions of the Earth. Earth’s movements. Elements of Geodesy. • Coordinate reference systems. Geodetic Reference Systems and Projections in Greece and worldwide. • Topographic maps. • Morphological sections. Cartometry. • Elements of Surveying. • Introduction to Cartography. • Digital Cartography. Digital topographic and geological maps, digital geological data. • Introduction to Geoscience and the applications of geospatial technologies (Geographic Information Systems / GIS, Remote Sensing, Global Navigation Satellite Systems / GNSS). • Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). • Environmental Geography. Structure and material of laboratories / laboratory-tutorial exercises • Scale • Orientation • Coordinates • Coordinate conversions and calculations • Topographic map I • Topographic map II • Morphological sections I • Morphological sections II • Cartometry • Map projections • Construction of geological maps • Map making • Digital topographic and geological maps - digital geological data Course-related daily field trip • Daily Field Exercise on "Geography" • Exercise Location: Chortiatis • Field Exercise Content: Use of topographic and geological map in digital and analog format (orientation, relief, morphological sections) Measurements of angles, distances and inclinations, with instruments such as: compass, slider, laser distance meters, theodolite, etc. Using GNSS (Horizontal Coordinates, Elevations).
