Learning Outcomes
The goal of the Genetic Counseling course for medical students is to equip them with the necessary knowledge and skills so that they can: Understand the fundamental principles of genetics. Acquire basic knowledge of the molecular, cellular, and clinical aspects of genetics. Comprehend the connection between genetic mutations and diseases. Communicate simple genetic information clearly to patients. Assess genetic risks for both patients and their families. Identify which patients require genetic counseling. Determine whether they are interested in pursuing the specialty of Medical Genetics after completing their undergraduate studies. The Specialty of Medical Genetics and Genetic Counseling Requires that Physicians: Clearly communicate complex genetic information to patients and their families. Support patients in making decisions based on their genetic status while considering personal, ethical, and social factors. Recognize and manage ethical dilemmas that may arise during genetic counseling. Respect patient autonomy and sensitive personal data. Collaborate with physicians from various other specialties, as well as other healthcare professionals.

Student Assessment
Description
Students will be assessed through multiple-choice questions at the end of the semester. The questions will cover the material taught throughout the semester. Thirty percent (30%) of the final grade will depend on their attendance and participation in class during the semester. Specifically, their participation in role-play exercises, which will take place during the second week of classes, will be evaluated. These exercises will involve genetic counseling scenarios with patients, parents of patients, and couples during pregnancy.
