Course Content (Syllabus)
The purpose of the course is the education in the science and technology of ceramic building materials and in particular in ceramic raw materials, in the production processes of ceramics and in their properties related to the protection, maintenance and restoration of cultural monuments. The aim of the course is to acquaint the students with the production technology of optical bricks as well as the measurement of properties of optical bricks. Methods of analysis of optical bricks Effect of mechanical and chemical stress, water and atmospheric pollutants Issues of restoration of optical bricks in monuments Determination of the characteristics of ceramic materials to be replaced Determination of selection criteria for optobricks/ceramics for restoration Maintenance and restoration methods Technological design and production of the appropriate optical brick/ceramic Visit to an industry/craftsmanship producing traditional type of optical bricks. Related exhibition with photographic documentation. Method of student participation Laboratory exculpatory matter Students undertake a limited laboratory topic on measuring properties of optical bricks or improving the quality and behavior of traditional type optical bricks. Issue of report and evaluation of the results is delivered. Estimated employment time for the preparation of the work 3 weeks. The matter is received and discussed by the responsible I. Papagianni.
