Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, students will be able to:
• be acquaintance with the institutional frame, related to the protection of Monuments, in a national and global scale
• obtain an in-depth knowledge of the basic notions, terminology and the legislator’s priorities and purposes in order to
• intepret the texts, their connections, as long as the interactions between them
• use the related Legislation Corpus/Index -a significant scientific instrument- in a valid and effective way
Course Content (Syllabus)
In the era of a free market economy, pandemics, ChatGPT and others dramatically accelarating changes, where the notion of monuments is strongly redefined, a thorough knowledge about Heritage Legislation proves to be crucial.
The course aims to familiarize students with the main knowledge concerning heritage legislation and the function of the related State Institutions.
The introductory part focuses on the history of cultural heritage laws, starting from the establishment of the Modern Greek State (1832) and the birth of the earliest State Service in Europe, responsible for cultural monuments, sites and museums, the Greek Archaeological Service (1833).
The core of the course includes intepretive approaches to the National Law (Constitution of Greece-Hellenic Parliament, basic legislation) and the International Conventions for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (either adopted or not by the Greek Parliament). In addition, the course offers a critical analysis of important documents: the International Charters and Codes of Ethics (ICOMOS, UNESCO, UNIDROIT, e.t.c.), ralated to the Protection of Cultural Heritage, (tangible and intangible), as the have strongly influenced the local legislation in a global scale.
