Based on the guidelines of the European Qualifications Framework (
EQF) and levels 6, 7, and 8, students who successfully complete the course will have acquired the following knowledge, skills, and competencies:
Knowledge:
- Explain and critically evaluate theoretical frameworks and current research on bilingualism, multilingualism, and special educational needs (SEN)
- Demonstrate advanced understanding of cognitive, linguistic, and socio-cultural factors affecting bilingual learners with SEN
- Analyse educational policies and practices related to inclusive education for bilingual and multilingual learners with SEN
Skills:
- Design and apply evidence-based teaching strategies to support bilingual learners with SEN in diverse educational contexts
- Select, adapt, and evaluate assessment tools and intervention programs appropriate for multilingual learners with learning difficulties
- Conduct independent research in the field of special education and bilingualism, including literature reviews, data collection, and analysis
- Synthesize interdisciplinary perspectives from linguistics, psychology, and education to propose innovative approaches to inclusive learning
- Communicate complex concepts effectively, both orally and in writing, to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
Competencies:
- Collaborate effectively with teachers, therapists, psychologists, and families to design and implement individualized educational plans
- Adopt culturally responsive practices when working with bilingual and multilingual learners and their communities
- Critically reflect on their own professional practice to enhance inclusivity and equity in education
- Take a leadership role in promoting inclusive educational practices for bilingual students with SEN
- Apply ethical principles when working with vulnerable populations and handling sensitive linguistic and learning data

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course explores the complex interaction between bilingualism, multilingualism, and special educational needs (SEN) within diverse educational contexts. Students will critically examine theoretical frameworks, current research, and policies related to inclusive education for bilingual and multilingual learners with SEN. The course equips students with advanced knowledge of cognitive, linguistic, and socio-cultural factors affecting bilingual learners, alongside practical skills for designing evidence-based instructional strategies and assessment tools. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary perspectives, culturally responsive practices, and collaborative approaches involving educators, families, and specialists. By the end of the course, students will be able to conduct independent research, develop inclusive teaching practices, and take leadership roles in promoting equitable education for bilingual learners with special needs.

The assessement consists of a variety of methods to ensure that many different skills are developed and assessed. More specifically, written assignemnts, oral presentations, and written and oral exams are part of the assessment methods, which require the development of several skills, such as academic writing, synthesis, theoretical understanding, referencing, application of theory, critical thinking, educational insight, reflective analysis, oral communication, content mastery, engagement, use of visual aids, research, argumentation, originality.
