Course Content (Syllabus)
During the 1980s and 1990s, much of the effort to establish a contemporary model of social criticism took the form of a debate about the normative foundations of liberal democracies. In this seminar, we will begin with the most comprehensive attempt to establish liberal and democratic principles in a contemporary, “post-metaphysical” notion of Reason, that is, we will begin with Jürgen Habermas's theory of democracy. However, linking democracy to the concept of communicative rationality has led to a universal and formalistic view of it, which can be criticized in a number of ways. This will give us the opportunity to discuss the efforts of other critical theorists to supplement or correct the shortcomings of the theory of “deliberative democracy” associated with its formalism (e.g., A. Wellmer, A. Honneth) or to transcend its limitations in a new direction (C. Castoriadis). Finally, depending on availability, we will examine versions of criticism of the universalism of the consensual model of “deliberative” democracy, as formulated in the context of the theory of “agonistic democracy” (E. Laclau, S. Mouffe) or French theories of poststructuralist origin (E. Balibar, J. Rancière), in which democracy is conceived as a field of development of unresolved disagreements/tensions.
