Learning Outcomes
Upon the successful completion of this course, students will know about: 1. for the analysis of wood into its components, its chemical composition. 2. the origin, isolation, chemical structure, biosynthesis, chemical reactions of its components 3. the importance of cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin and wood extracts, the role they serve in the tree and in the wood. 4. the chemical properties of wood as a material, the types of modification of wood and differentiation of its properties, 5. the methods of production of wood pulp and paper, polymer derivatives of cellulose, chemical products of wood, 6. the energy utilization of wood and forest biomass.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course mainly deals with the following: The chemical composition and chemical analysis of wood components (cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin, extracts, ash/minerals). The Occurrence and Origin, Biosynthesis, Characteristics, Properties, their Role and Importance for the tree and wood as a material, Biological functions, ways of Isolation, Chemical and Supramolecular structure, and chemical Reactions of wood components. Variability in the chemical composition of the wood (horizontal, vertical, in the form of a cell wall, etc.) and Chemical composition of the Bark. The chemical properties and chemical behavior of wood are examined (Introduction of reagents into the mass of wood, Swelling-shrinkage using chemical substances, Degradation of wood with chemical substances, Thermal degradation, combustion, Biological degradation, chemical depolymerization/deterioration factors). Wood modification and protection techniques: the modification of wood (thermal modification, chemical modification, acetylation, surface modification, modification by impregnation, modification with nanoformulations/nanoparticles, fire-retardants etc.), in order to improve its properties and reduce the drawbacks of wood as a construction material. Production of chemical wood products and extracts, chemical cellulose derivatives, Pulping, Handling of pulp after pulping, pulp production methods, paper, paper types and properties, production techniques of other polymers, chemical cellulose. Methods of production of chemicals, cellulose products, hemicelluloses, lignin and extracts. Wood as a fuel material, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of its use, methods of energy production utilizing wood and forest biomass as a feedstock, biochar, biofuels (pyrolysis, carbonization, liquefaction, gasification, etc.).
