Course Content (Syllabus)
The ecological crisis. Systemin approach to the correlation between Economy-Environment- Society. Inclusion of the environment in Education. The genesis and historical evolution of Environmental Education. The International Summits of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s about Environmental Education. The contents, characteristics, principals and goals of Environmental Education. Definitions and Terminology of Environmental Education. Defining the teaching process. The principles and goals of teaching in Environmental Education. Contemporary methodological approaches to teaching about the environment (interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity, the systematic and holistic approach, modelling and simulation). Scientific examples in Environmental Education. Socially critical Environmental Education. The establishment of Environmental Education Internationally and in Greece. Environmental Education Centers. From Environmental Education to the Education about Sustainable Development. Development and the design of Environmental Education Programs. Conceptual and pedagogical guidelines of Environmental Education Program. The different steps of structuring an Environmental Education program. Didactic approach to the values of Environmental Education. Didactic Techniques to better explain the Values of Environmental Education (role playing games, moral dilemma etc.). Assessment in the context of Environmental Education (scope, objectives and evaluation tools). Development and implementation of different criteria for the evaluation of environmental education teaching resources. The United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014).
