Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will: a) have acquired basic knowledge concerning fish farming in general, production systems, technologies and methods used, and their effects on the environment. b) they have understood the modern methods of breeding mainly freshwater fish species, such as trouts, salmons, carps, eels, surgeons, and grey mullets. c) special chapters have been taught for each species from the above, regarding their production technologies and the technical infrastructure required for their breeding. d) know the structure, operation, and aquaculture management of coastal lakes and lagoons.

Course Content (Syllabus)
General information about fish farms, criteria for selecting suitable species for breeding. Characteristics of suitable waters for fish farming. Aquaculture production systems. Description of intensive fish farms (lakes - rivers), semi-intensive fish farms (lagoons - coastal lakes), Intensive fish farming technologies. Status of fish farming internationally and in Greece, Analysis of strengths and weaknesses of the sector in Greece, Optimization of existing breeding technologies, Rational management of inland fish breeding waters, Optimization of the interaction between aquaculture and the environment. Trout Farming: General information, Species of trout and their breeding in Greece, Environmental and nutritional requirements of rainbow trout, Selection of trout farm installation sites, Origin, Quantity and Quality of water, Necessary facilities, Artificial reproduction of rainbow trout, Breeding to marketable size, Nutrition, Facts of Common Diseases. Salmon Farming, Breeding Species Biology and Intensive Farming, Salmon Farming in Greece and Internationally Eel farming, Eel biology, Life cycle, Eel fishery production, Eel (spawn) and young eel supply, Eel farming systems Carp farming: General information about carp, Choosing a place to establish a carp farm, Quality and Quantity of water, Types and Construction of tanks. Types of breeding (Natural, Semi-Controlled, Controlled, Artificial), Breeding, Nutrition, Fish Capacity calculation, Common Diseases.
