Learning Outcomes
Students will learn about the soil classification procedures and the most common soil classification systems. They will learn, also about the mapping of forest sites and at the end they will have the ability to know the suitability of forest soils in relation to the productivity and the other uses of forest lands.

Course Content (Syllabus)
In the course, there is a brief reference to soil formation, basic characteristics and properties of soils. For a better understanding of the purpose and process of classification, mapping and evaluation of forest lands, reference is made to the relationships between the practice of Forestry and the characteristics of a forest land. Τhe systems of classification and description of soils are examined with particular reference to the American System (Soil Taxonomy) and that of the International Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). A presentation of new technologies applied to soil classification and mapping is made, while applications of these technologies are mentioned. Finally, the stages and procedures related to the planning, design, implementation and presentation of land and forest mapping projects and tasks are taught. The general chapters of the course are the following: • Introduction (Forestry practice and characteristics of a forest land) • Classifications and description systems • Mapping stages and degree of detail • Planning and organizing mappings • Outdoor activities • Estimates of the suitability of land for various uses and its physical productivity • Final reports and maps
