Course Content (Syllabus)
Writing academic papers is not the only essential requirement in university studies. Successful handouts, thesis papers, abstracts, and both oral and written presentations are also regularly expected throughout one’s academic career—and later, they often play a significant role in professional life as well. This seminar offers practice in the creation of written academic work, from the initial selection of a topic to the structure and formal presentation of a paper. Another aim of the seminar is to help students identify appropriate academic sources and to use them correctly—avoiding plagiarism (i.e. intellectual property theft) and copy-paste scenarios. To this end, we will work on proper citation techniques, paraphrasing, structuring arguments, and compiling bibliographies. In addition, we will address common challenges students face—some of which can lead to dropping out of university studies: procrastination (the pathological delay of duties related to academic completion), fear of contact, and avoidance of communication with instructors.
