Course Content (Syllabus)
Language development, an achievement of children all over the world, is a process that raises very interesting questions for science: • How do children acquire their language? • What is the developmental path? • What is the "equipment" they bring with them? • What is the impact of the environment? These questions have sparked a research boom, especially in recent years, and at the same time have initiated heated debates among researchers. The aim of the course is to introduce students to the field of language development. During the course, the communicative, biological and cognitive development during infancy is presented. Next, the course delves into the typical language acquisition of preschoolers. We'll explore how they master sounds (phonology), word structure (morphology and syntax), and meaning (semantics). We'll also see how they use language effectively to communicate. Finally, the course will shift its focus to later language development during school years, and we will discuss the connection between education and language learning. Finally, the course presents and discusses the theories that have been proposed and which aim to explain the observed developmental course but also to form the basis for the formulation of testable hypotheses.
