Course Content (Syllabus)
It is commonly acknowledged that the actual literacy practices prevailing in the social and cultural environment of students are completely ignored by the Greek educational system, in the sense that a multimodal - critical approach to teaching literacy is not adopted, in order to understand the way in which individuals are able to use various semiotic sources to create meaning. This means that, since the school system focuses exclusively on the linguistic mode, teachers do not have the appropriate means to assess the meanings that their students create in other ways. Therefore, at the theoretical level of the course, after presenting, analysing and discussing the basic positions of the most important approaches to the analysis and teaching of multimodal discourse, the emphasis is then placed, through discussion with the students, on the critical evaluation and analysis of specific teaching modules, which are representative examples of the implementation of the objectives of the Greek language syllabus for primary school that are related to the use of multimodal communication forms, from the point of view of the way in which they are implemented. At the practical level, the course aims to provide students with the tools through which they will be able to design and/or implement visual/multimodal literacy practices in a primary school classroom in the language classroom. In addition, the course seeks to familiarize students with ways of using the World Wide Web so that they can search for and critically evaluate the content, reliability and usefulness of information for learning purposes.
