Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the students are expected to:
Know various types of museums.
Understand the educational and social dynamics of the museum based on the main concepts of the new definition of the museum.
Understand the role of museum as a non-formal learning environment in relation to formal education and to lifelong learning.
Know the qualitative characteristics of museum learning and experience and the learning benefits for all children.
Understand the basic concepts, principles and methods of Museum Education for the design of inclusive educational programs.
Be able to design and implement a museum educational program based on principles and methods of Museum Education according to the characteristics of various target audiences with emphasis in school groups.
Use museum educational material (conventional and digital) inside and outside of the school.
Evaluate activities and educational material from museums and cultural sites.
Know and use reflective practices.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The subject of the course “Museum Education” is the theoretical and educational approach of the museum as non-formal and informal learning environment complementary to formal education and in lifelong learning. The aim of the course is to prepare future teachers in order to be able to utilize the museum in the frame of various contexts, educational programs and activities (e.g. in various types of museums, archaeological sites, monuments, exhibitions, etc.) as well as inside the school for the holistic development of all children. The main thematic axes of the course are the following: a. the brief presentation of the evolution of museums with emphasis on their contemporary educational and social role, b. the main concepts included in the new and latest museum definition (e.g. inclusive, accessible, participatory museum, education, enjoyment, knowledge sharing, reflection), c. the theoretical background of Museum Education and the qualitative characteristics of museum learning and experience, d. the relationship of school and museum, the interconnection of Museum Education with the curriculum, the arts, the inclusive education, the intercultural education, local history, technologies etc., through examples and field activities in museum spaces, d. the methodological framework for designing educational activities with emphasis on learning theories and design principles and frameworks (e.g. Universal Design for Learning, Differentiated Pedagogy) with the aim to respond to the heterogeneity of the student population (e.g. mixed-ability classes, children with disabilities and/or special educational needs, multiculturalism etc.), e. the design of appropriate and inclusive museum educational programs and activities, f. the use of various methods, tools and educational materials (conventional and digital), and d. the development of collaborative practices and the role of teachers as mediators among museum, school, families and society.

Description
Use of Power Point presentations during the lectures and other digital material (e.g. videos, podcasts, museum digital resources etc.). Announcements, instructions and educational material, students' assignments at the e-learning platform, use of forum, quiz etc. Communication with students via e-learning and e-mail.

Student Assessment
Description
During the semester the students will:
Study and present theoretical texts of relevant literature
Write assignment
Participate in field trips in cultural sites in Thessaloniki.
Work with educational material (including digital)
Final evaluation
The students will work in small groups and individually and are evaluated both at group and at individual level.
