Course Content (Syllabus)
This course offers an extensive overview of the influences of various European musical avant-garde movements of the 20th century on modern Greek art music, across different chronological phases, both before and after World War II. It also extends historiographical research in Greece up to the first two decades of the 21st century. The course process includes, through historical examination of each period, highlighting social, ideological, and cultural fermentations as catalysts for the creation of new artistic and musical trends (both in Greece and abroad) and the ways these are assimilated and expressed as artistic creation and broader cultural expression. People, trends, works, and institutions are juxtaposed with the cultural burdens of each period, interdisciplinary markers, the "hidden" musical histories, or the disruption of the "canon," from a critical, comparative, inductive, and conclusive perspective. The history of Greek musical modernism is examined as a dynamic, evolving phenomenon linked to issues of ideologies and identities, social and economic conditions, cultural markers, and cultural policies. Its reception is interpreted as a constant reflection of the Greek paradigm from a more global perspective. Through the historical, analytical, aesthetic, ideological, and critical overview of the relationships between Greek musical avant-garde and the broader social, political, and cultural environment where it was shaped and evolved, key questions are addressed regarding the legacies and prospects of the domestic musical life and creation, and their representatives, in the Greek 20th and 21st centuries. The subject matter involves historiographical, music-analytical, stylistic, and aesthetic-ideological highlights of the ways of artistic expression and compositional creation by individuals, organizations, and institutions that defined this era within various movements, schools, or repertoires. The interdisciplinary nature of the study is supported by extensive bibliographical documentation, considering both the rich scientific output of the last thirty years since the establishment of Greek academic musicology and its most recent findings, making this course an up-to-date guide to the latest secondary sources in modern Greek music.
