Prerequisites
General Prerequisites
The Coordinating Committee approves the topic (after the complation of 45ECTS of courses), the supervisor, and appoints the three-member examination committee, one member of which is the supervisor. During the preparation of the thesis, the student works closely with the supervisor, reports in detail on the progress of the research and the writing of the thesis, and consults the other two members of the committee, depending on the issues that arise. The supervisor guides the student to take all necessary measures to improve the content of the thesis, resolve methodological issues, and develop a scientific writing style. The student incorporates all suggestions from the supervisor, including final suggestions/corrections before submitting the thesis to the members of the three-member examination committee
Learning Outcomes
1. At a very high and demanding level, development of original thinking, scientific/epistemological breadth, and generally the consolidation of the methodological tools and critical skills required for the practice of philological science in the modern era.
2. Specifically, learning the method of composing an intermediate-length essay, between a short seminar paper and a potential future, longer dissertation, sufficiently extensive to encourage combinatory thinking and the ability to delve deeply into the subject.
3. Systematic bibliographical research and creative use of all bibliographical tools to support the student’s original thinking.
4. Cognitive acquisition of all the parameters that constitute a correct, persuasive argumentation with coherence and clarity, from the structure of the individual sections of the thesis to the correct integration of citations/examples and explanatory footnotes.
5. Awareness and strict adherence to the ethics and research ethics, with absolute respect for intellectual property and, generally, the work of other members of the research community.
6. Depending on the chosen specialization field and the peculiarities of the thesis topic, development of combinatory skills across multiple scientific fields (e.g., History and Philology, Literary Theory, Cultural Theories and their application in the study of Literature, etc.).
7. Ability to organize and present data to a broad audience.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The thesis (15,000–20,000 words) aims to deepen the student's involvement in scientific research and/or the scientific literature, with the communication of their results, both in written and oral form, in accordance with the standards of the international scientific community.

Student Assessment
Description
An oral defense of the thesis is held before the three-member examination committee. The author of the thesis answers questions regarding the content of the thesis and the methodology followed.
The three-member examination committee meets and the members exchange opinions on whether the thesis meets the required writing standards and how well the thesis addresses the research/scientific objectives of the topic. The committee then decides on the grade for the thesis and announces it to the student. It is noted that the students' workload is particularly increased because 1) many of the Byzantine texts that students must read are not translated into Modern Greek (the existence of translations would speed up their work), and 2) a large percentage of the secondary literature is in foreign languages.
