Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of field practice, students will be able:
1.To understand the basic principles of Economic Geology
2.To understand the conditions of the formation of chromite ore deposits
3. To understand the conditions of the formation of the Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn ore deposits
4.To link theoretical knowledge with practical applications during field work.
5.To learn about the industrial minerals and rocks
6.Τo indentify and correlate sedimentary layers.
7.Το construct a stratigraphic column.
8.Το understand the methodology of tectonic structure identification in the field.
9.To correlate and to make comparative dating of deformational events.
10. To learn about the transport and deposition processes of clastic and evaporitic sediments.
11. To understand and to calculate of hydraulic head and its role to define the direction of groundwater flow.
12. To estimate of surface runoff at a river basin scale.
13. To adapt to field conditions.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Field Practices Triadi (5st Semester). The field practices take place within the framework of the Compulsory Course "Economic Geology". The purposes of the exercises are:
1. Alpine-type Cr deposit, Triadi of Thessaloniki
2. Formation conditions of the chromite deposit associated with ophiolites
3. Relationship with the geological and geotectonic evolution of the area
4. Relationship with the hosts rocks
5. Types and mineralogical composition of the deposit
6. Magmatic and metamagnetic processes from which chromite and the gangue minerals were formed.
Field Practice Olympus (5th Semester). The Field Practice takes place in the context of the Tectonic Geology course. The route includes Thessaloniki - Olympus - Elassona - Ambelakia - Thessaloniki.
The purpose of the exercise is:
• Identification of important tectonic structures (normal and reverse faults, folds, lineaments etc.) in the field.
• Comparative dating of tectonic events.
• Geological structure of Mt. Olympus.
• The tectonic window of Mt. Olympus.
• The structural importance of Ambelakia Unit.
Field Practice West Macedonia (5th Semester). The exercise takes place at Industrial Minerals and Rocks Course Selection. Includes a visit to various industrial mining and processing industrial minerals and rocks of Western Macedonia (Grevena, Kastoria, Kozani and Florina).
The purpose of the exercise is to study industrial minerals and rocks (clay, quartz, carbonate,residual decomposition), understanding the conditions of their genesis and finding out how to extract and enrich them.
Field Practice Western Halkidiki (5th Semester). The exercise takes place in the context of the Compulsory Course in Stratigraphy & Historical Geology. It includes the route Thessaloniki - Souroti - Agios Antonios - Kato Scholari - Lakkoma - Nea Gonia - Nea Moudania - Thessaloniki. The purposes of the exercise are the identification of characteristic sedimentary layers, their description - mapping and the construction of a stratigraphic column from the composition of all the elements. General geological data on the age and geological evolution of the area are also given.
Field Practices Kavala (6st Semester). The field practices take place within the framework of the Compulsory Course "Economic Geology". The purposes of the exercises are:
1. Intrusion related magmatic-hydrothermal Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn deposit, Kavala
2. Formation conditions of the deposit associated with the Kavala granodiorite
3. Relationship with the geological and geotectonic evolution of the area
4. Relationship with the hosts rocks
5. Types and mineralogical composition of the deposit
6. Magmatic, hydrothermal and supergene processes from which mineralization was formed.
Field Practice Vromolimnes (6th Semester). The exercise takes place in the context of the Compulsory Course in Hydrogeology. The exersice take place in the region of Vromolimnes, Mygdonia basin. Field exercise includes groundwater level measurements in a water well near Lake Volvi and measurements of torrent flow in the Area using a hydrometric reel implemented. Purpose of the exercise: The understanding and calculation of the hydraulic load and its importance for determining the flow direction of groundwater. The calculation of the surface runoff of river torrents.
Field Practice Aggelochori (6th Semester). The exercise takes place in the context of the Compulsory Course in Sedimentology. It includes the route Thessaloniki- Aggelochori beach, lagoon-salt pans, Megalo Emvolo region, Thessaloniki. The purpose of the exercise is to recognize different type of sediments, to recognize pre-depositional, depositional and post-depositional features, to learn about the transport and deposition processes of clastic and evaporitic sediments.
