Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, undergraduate students will a) know and understand the physical, chemical, biological and geological processes in the oceans and seas as well as their interactions, focusing on the most recent and important achievements of Oceanography, b) know how to apply basic knowledge with a systemic approach in order to be able to interpret and assess changes at different scales, c) have acquired the ability to identify marine photosynthetic organisms and to measure and estimate their primary productivity, d) have acquired fluency in the use of foreign bibliography and in presenting topics relevant to the course, acting independently or in collaboration at a group level, and f) have become aware of issues related to the protection and management of marine ecosystems.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Development of the science of oceanography, the most important achievements. Geological processes and characteristics of the oceans and seas: Formation and classification of coasts, coastal landforms, marine sedimentogenesis, marine sediments (composition, origin, classification), remote sensing of the ocean floor. Topics of physical oceanography: ocean circulation, currents, waves, tides. Physical and chemical properties of seawater. Topics of chemical oceanography: World ocean and climate (greenhouse effect, sea level rise, acid rain, climate change), chemical processes: transport and fate of pollutants in the marine environment (petroleum hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons, radioactivity, metals). Biological processes: Productivity, global productivity patterns, biological carbon pump, benthic habitats and biocommunities, Coastal habitats (Mangroves, coral reefs, estuarine systems), food webs, planktonic outcrops, energy food pyramid, oceanic habitats – biozones. Marine angiosperms: Ecosystem services, blue carbon pools, biogeography, meadow mapping and diversity, abundance and productivity, food webs, threats and resilience of meadows, biomonitoring, management. Decade of Ocean Science. Marine literacy. Principles and concepts in marine angiosperms.
Measurement of primary productivity of dominant marine angiosperm species of the Mediterranean (leaf scar method in the species Cymodocea nodosa and lepidochronology method in Posidonia oceanica). Preparation of assignments, in groups, on topics related to marine angiosperms.
