Upon completion of the course students will be able
-To implement aesthetic and contextual approaches investigating recurring themes and motifs.
-To develop a method and construct a system in organizing intensive close up readings of texts.
-To collect and arrange appropriate research data in evaluating their significance for assignment planning.

-to have a comprehensive oversight of the coexistence of criticism with literature, and in particular with poetry in the wider range of 19th and 20th century

Course Content (Syllabus)
Placing the critique in a broader theoretical and historical context from the middle of the 19th century to date, the seminar proposes to study the dependence of poetry on criticism, focusing on the case of George Seferis as a critic of C. P. Cavafy. The "national" poet Seferis absorbs and fertilizes the vibrations of anti-Cavafy criticism, proposing to the literary market a new portrait of the diasporic poet of Alexandria.

Neglecting the traditional methods of the literary critic Seferis uses his personal experience as a reader and proposes a radical change in the way we conceive the literary essay as an impressionistic but quasi scientific text.
