General Prerequisites
In order for a student to properly understand and apply epidemiological concepts — such as study design, interpretation of results, and evaluation of associations between risk factors and diseases — prior knowledge of basic statistical concepts is essential.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: Define epidemiology and explain its key components (population, frequency, distribution, determinants, outcomes), applying these concepts to public health case studies and descriptive epidemiology (person, place, time). Describe and calculate measures of frequency and comparison (cumulative incidence, incidence rate, prevalence, risk difference, risk ratio, odds ratio) using epidemiological data and practical examples. Identify and distinguish different types of epidemiological studies (descriptive, cohort, case–control, cross-sectional), discussing their design, advantages, limitations, as well as issues of bias, confounding, and ethical considerations. Define and describe epidemics and pandemics, and outline the key steps in outbreak investigation through the study of historical and simulated scenarios. Explain environmental health risk factors, identifying major atmospheric, waterborne, and foodborne pollutants, their causal agents, and their impacts on human health. Recognize physical, biological, and occupational hazards, including vector-borne diseases, ionizing radiation, and occupational illnesses, evaluating their effects and describing prevention and control strategies.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Definition, objectives, and historical development of epidemiology. Population, health, and disease: definitions and conceptual framework. Measuring disease frequency and identifying sources of public health data. Commonly used measures of disease frequency and methods of comparing frequencies. Descriptive epidemiology: person, place, and time. Overview of epidemiological study design. Experimental studies. Cohort studies. Case–control studies. Confounding: concepts and examples. Mortality rates and their applications. Epidemiological approaches to causation. Environmental epidemiology. Ethical issues in epidemiological research. Standardization in epidemiology and public health. Meta-analyses: principles and applications. The air we breathe: air pollutants and health impacts. The water we drink: water safety and waterborne diseases. The food we eat: food safety, foodborne disease, and GMO concerns. Occupational health: exposures, risks, and preventive strategies. Environmental health and natural hazards: radiation, disasters, and community impact. Environmental health and the climate crisis: emerging diseases and global health challenges.
