Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
Define epidemiology and explain its key components (population, frequency, distribution, determinants, outcomes), applying these concepts to public health case studies and descriptive epidemiology (person, place, time).
Describe and calculate measures of frequency and comparison (cumulative incidence, incidence rate, prevalence, risk difference, risk ratio, odds ratio) using epidemiological data and practical examples.
Identify and distinguish different types of epidemiological studies (descriptive, cohort, case–control, cross-sectional), discussing their design, advantages, limitations, as well as issues of bias, confounding, and ethical considerations.
Define and describe epidemics and pandemics, and outline the key steps in outbreak investigation through the study of historical and simulated scenarios.
Explain environmental health risk factors, identifying major atmospheric, waterborne, and foodborne pollutants, their causal agents, and their impacts on human health.
Recognize physical, biological, and occupational hazards, including vector-borne diseases, ionizing radiation, and occupational illnesses, evaluating their effects and describing prevention and control strategies.
