Course Content (Syllabus)
The subject of the course is the cosmological ideas of the ancient Greeks. After a brief overview of the cosmogonic and cosmological approaches of the Pre-Socratics and the mechanistic natural explanation of the Atomists, with a focus mainly on astronomy up to the Hellenistic period, the course will concentrate on the teleological cosmological thought of Plato (particularly in “Timaeus”) and Aristotle (especially in “Physics” and “On the Heavens”), emphasizing on theories of time, space, motion, and change.
