Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will have acquired basic theoretical and historical knowledge on field of urban planning. More specifically: - they will become acquainted with the modes of evolution of the urban phenomenon and of cities, in particular; - they will understand the historical development of cities and of urban planning; - they will learn the basic concepts of urban planning; - they will understand the various theoretical approaches, the models and policies, the mechanisms and procedures for the formation and design of the urban space; - they will grasp the importance of urban planning and urban design in face of the ecological crisis and in response to the need for adaptation to climate change.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course includes the following thematic lectures: 1. City and planning: an introduction 2. Evolution of the urban phenomenon: from the first human settlements to our Urban Age 3. History of the city I: from the ancient ages up to Renaissance 4. History of the city II: from the Renaissance up to World War II 5. History of the city III: from World War II to today 6. Post war urban development and planning: Urban planning of the welfare state 7. Urban development and policies of urban renewal: Urban planning from 1970 onwards 8. History of the Greek city I: 1830-1922 9. History of the Greek city II: 1923-1983 10. Urban plans as tools for planning and regulating urban development 11. Contemporary issues in the design of cities 12. City design in the era of the Anthropocene

Description
Power Point and videos are used for the lectures. All lectures are accessible through e-learning. Furthermore e-learning is used for uploading all information(literature, guidelines etc.) necessary for conducting the projects. There is an extensive use of e-learning for regular corresponding purposes with students (email, announcements etc) as well as for their evaluation.

Description
The final grade for each student will be formulated as follows: - 3 quizzes during the semester = 30% (3*10%) - Final examination = 70%
