Knowledge and Understanding
Introduction to negotiation theory:
Students will understand the fundamental principles and models of negotiation theory.
They will articulate key concepts such as BATNA (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement) and ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement).
Negotiation and Strategic Thinking:
Participants will understand the interplay between negotiation strategies and strategic thinking in crisis situations.
They will analyze case studies to identify successful strategic negotiation approaches.
Negotiation as a crisis prevention mechanism:
Students will be able to evaluate the role of negotiation as a proactive tool for crisis prevention.
They will apply negotiation techniques in hypothetical scenarios to prevent potential conflicts.
Crisis management:
Learners will gain a comprehensive understanding of the principles and frameworks of crisis management.
They will evaluate and propose crisis management strategies suitable for different scenarios.
Media and crisis management:
Participants will analyze the impact of media in crisis situations.
They will develop communication plans to manage media dynamics during crises.
Peaceful dispute resolution (legal nature of the dispute):
Students will understand the legal aspects of disputes by exploring peaceful resolution mechanisms.
They will assess the applicability of legal frameworks in different dispute scenarios.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course mainly studies the following topics: Crisis Management Strategies (Crisis Management Strategies) Definitions. Crisis Management Strategies (Crisis Management Strategies). Crisis Management Techniques. Negotiation Basics. "Safe" decision making in crisis handling. Role of Leadership. Deterrence. Definition of Deterrence. Direct and Indirect Deterrence. 2 historical case studies of failed and successful deterrence: start of WWII (1939) and Iraq (1961); 2 current case studies (Ukraine - Taiwan). Deterrence in Greek-Turkish relations. The Nature of Conflict and the Legal Concept of Dispute. Ways and Mechanisms of Transnational Dispute Resolution. Introduction to the Theory and Practice of Diplomacy. Diplomatic and Consular Law and Diplomatic and Consular Relations. The UN and the Diplomatic Resolution of International Disputes. The role of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Jurisdictional Mechanisms for the Settlement of Transnational Disputes - Greece at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Peaceful settlement of disputes with emphasis on Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus problem (I); Peaceful settlement of disputes with emphasis on Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus problem (II); Settlement of disputes between states and individuals - the ECtHR and the role of the Council of Europe in the protection of human rights. In this course, seminars are held on the following topics, indicatively listed: Managing other Crises - Case studies. Other Crises (Depression 1929 vs Crisis 2008) Social Crises (Refugee - Immigration 2015) Human Error (Chernobyl 1986 vs Fukushima 2011) Natural Disasters (Hurricane Katrina 2005). Application of lessons with case studies a. Application of lessons with case studies a. Failed crisis handling: Start of WWI. b. Successful crisis handling: Cuban Missile Crisis. Fictional scenario of handling an interstate crisis. Simulated UN Security Council meeting. Twelve (12) hours of comprehensive training on the art and practices of negotiation and mediation are provided as part of this course. A special seminar shall include
still crisis management in the seventh art and the instrumentalization of the image.
