Course Content (Syllabus)
The development of Rural Tourism reflects the more general development of specific forms of tourism and the shift in popularity from "traditional" seaside destinations to destinations that offer a wider range of experiences and respond to new social trends for active engagement with the natural-rural landscape, the culture, traditions but also in new local-sustainable development strategies. On the other hand, it is part of the need of the rural household to adapt to the restructuring of the rural area and the adoption of multi-activity practices.
The purpose of the course is to understand the philosophy of Rural Tourism, a form of tourism that develops in the countryside and utilizes the resources of the natural and man-made environment and is largely concerned with the "sense of place", that is, the feelings that are registered in a geographical space, into a physical destination, and turn it into a destination associated with meanings, symbolic values and identities related to the "rural idyll".
Indicatively, the content of the course deals with the transition of the rural area from a place of production to a place of consumption of experiences utilizing modern theoretical approaches such as the social construction and the "consumption" of the rural area, the rural ideal and the "gaze" of the tourist. It continues with conceptual approaches that are often used interchangeably: Rural Tourism, Agrotourism, Agritourism, Farm Tourism and Vacation Farms. It presents the historical development of rural tourism in Greece and in the world in the light of the transition to a sustainable local development. It applies modern marketing and management tools to the management of the agritourism business and the agritourism destination (psychography, typologies of tourists, etc.) and explores the gender dimensions of the development of rural tourism (women's agritourism cooperatives), social innovation and the connection with other special forms tourism in the countryside (wine tourism, bee tourism, gastronomic tourism, etc.). Rural businesses and destinations are challenged to meet the modern challenges of meeting hygiene, safety and comfort standards, while maintaining their traditional and rural character and authenticity. They are invited to "balance" between the values of the past and the modern needs for quality, thus networking and quality issues will be analyzed, Local Quality Accords in Rural Tourism/Space
