Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the course students will have: 1) Gaining in-depth knowledge. Students demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the chosen research topic, including relevant theories, methodologies and existing literature 2) Critical Analysis and Evaluation. Students develop the ability to critically analyze and evaluate existing research, identifying gaps and limitations in the current literature 3) Research Design and Methodology. Students design and apply appropriate research methodologies, demonstrating knowledge of both qualitative and/or quantitative research techniques 4) Data collection and analysis. Students collect, manage and analyze data effectively using appropriate tools and techniques, drawing valid conclusions and ideas from the findings 5) Independent research and problem solving. Students demonstrate the ability to work independently, showing initiative in identifying and solving research problems that arise during the course of the thesis 6) Contribution to Knowledge. Course Content (Syllabus)
Each student prepares a Postgraduate Diploma Thesis (PG.D.Th.), the topic of which is defined at the beginning of the first semester of the Postgraduate Studies Program (PG.S.P.), which must be successfully completed in order to obtain the Master of Science (M.Sc.). The duration of the preparation and completion of the PG.D.Th. cannot be under three (3) months or to exceed one (1) year. The appointment of the supervisor (who also has the role of the Academic Advisor) and the topic of the PG.D.Th. is based on the selection by the students of the thematic scientific area - academic subject of the PG.S.P. (namely, Floriculture, Viticulture, Biometry-Data Analysis and Agricultural Experimentation, Agriculture, Arboriculture, Weed Science, Vegetable Science, Beekeeping, Ecology and Environmental Protection and Physiology-Ecophysiology) that has been declared in their application. The students, in consultation with the Teaching and Research Staff (T.R.S.) member of the thematic scientific area of the PG.S.P. that they have chosen, declare with the corresponding form to the Secretariat of the PG.S.P., the supervising T.R.S. member and the subject of the PG.D.Th The PG.D.Th. begins with a literature review, followed by the experimental part that will be carried out during the summer period (first phase) and finally it will be completed with the processing and presentation of the results (second phase) at the end of the third semester. The PG.D.Th. has a duration of at least two (2) academic semesters because the scientific areas that the students study are mainly based on experiments that require 6-8 months to be carried out. Each member who has the right to supervise theses cannot be assigned more than two (2) theses per year. Also, every member who has the right, if deemed necessary, must send a draft of the PG.D.Th. to the Research Ethics Committees or the Bioethics Committees (R.E.C.) of the AUTH, to establish whether the specific PG.D.Th. contradicts the existing legislation and if it is consistent with generally accepted rules of ethics and conduct of the research in terms of its content and the way it is conducted. The completion of the PG.D.Th. is followed by the examination by a three-member committee consisting of the supervisor and two other members of the same or related subject with the scientific areas of the PG.S.P. of the Department or other Departments or research bodies which are validated by the Executive Committee (E.C.) at least two (2) weeks before the date of the evaluation/examination (presentation) of the thesis. The PG.D.Th. receives 30 ECTS. The invitation with a specific date and time of the open presentation is communicated to the members of the Department, the undergraduate students, the postgraduate students and the doctoral candidates. After the public presentation (10-15 minutes) of the PG.D.Th. before the three-member committee, it will be evaluated/examined based on the evaluation standard which has been drawn-up by the E.C. and approved by the Department Assembly. The student is then tasked with the integration of the observations of the examination committee. Finally, under the responsibility of the supervising Teaching and Research Staff (T.R.S.) member, both a paper and an electronic copy of the PG.D.Th., as well as the evaluation report, shall be submitted to the Department Secretariat with the subject of PG.D.Th. and the score, so that they can be written in the student's detailed score or in the Diploma Supplement. After their testimony, the PG.D.Th. are placed in the library of the PG.S.P., where all T.R.S. members and students of all study levels have access. The instructions and the writing standard of the PG.D.Th. and their evaluation standard is posted on the PG.S.P. website.
