Course Content (Syllabus)
First published anonymously in Amsterdam in 1670, Spinoza’s Theological-Political Treatise is one of the most important works in Modern Political Philosophy. In outline the course consists of a study of some major issues in Spinoza’s theological and political thought. This study is divided into two parts:
Part I (Theological-Political Treatise, chapters 1-15)
- Prophecy and prophets.
- Divine law, natural law and miracles.
- The interpretation of Scripture.
- Faith and its distinction from philosophy.
Part II (Theological-Political Treatise, chapters 16-20)
- The foundations of the State.
- Right, power and freedom of speech.
- State and religion.
