Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims to familiarize students with the subject of the philosophy of culture and, in particular, the critique of modern culture, based on a discussion of Georg Lukács' early work. More specifically, the following topics will be discussed:
1) Basic themes in the philosophy of culture: The genesis and development of culture, cultural objectifications such as myth, ethics, religion, art, economics and politics, science and technology.
2) The general concept of culture and the specific problem of subjective cultivation.
3) The connection between subjective cultivation and education: The social production and reproduction of culture.
4) The internal link between the philosophy of culture and the critique of culture.
5) Models of cultural critique: tragedy and alienation, metaphysical and historical approaches to the problematic nature of culture.
6) Based on the discussion of Georg Lukács' early work, references will be made to classical thinkers and their ideas: Rousseau, Schiller, Schlegel, Hegel, Simmel, Rickert, etc.
7) Current questions about the relationship between technical and intellectual culture: The problem of the institutions and practices required for their balanced development.
