Learning Outcomes
The purpose of this seminar is to examine the basic methodological approaches in educational research from a critical perspective. The seminar provides a thorough review of educational research methods, and then focuses on issues of critical ideological analysis, emancipatory action research, critical discourse analysis and social semiotics, within the broader context of epistemological and pedagogical assumptions.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Learning contents, schedule Introduction to educational research: A. Social reality and epistemological “paradigms” of Science of Education (Hermeneutic, Empirical, Critical Pedagogy and Post-Critical Pedagogy). B. Qualitative and quantitative research (the “circular” and “linear” research model, the research methodology by model. The phenomenological-hermeneutic, empirical, critical and deconstructive educational research. (1st 2nd and 3rd seminars). Section One: Epistemological foundations of methodological approaches Introduction: A. in Critical Theory (Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School, the texts of A. Gramsci and L. Althusser, the poststructuralist critique, especially the work of Michel Foucault, the review of third wave feminism, gender studies, the Queer theory, cultural studies, modern African American review, the New London Group, etc.) and B. the critical theories of education: German critical Science of Education (kritische Erziehungswissenschaft) of 1970, the theory and practice of Paulo Freire and the contemporary Critical Pedagogy. (4th, 5th and 6th seminars) Section Two: Critical research approaches (with examples and exercises): A. Ideology critique B. Emancipatory Action Research C. Critical Discourse Analysis D. Social Semiotics and the Grammar of Visual Design. E. The example of empowering feminist research (7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th seminar) Section Three: During the semester, design, development and evaluation of participants and participating, a work plan on the critical investigation texts and educational practices of modern Greek school, which will use the above methodological approaches. Presentation of research at a conference open audience. Evaluation of the seminar (13th seminar).
