Course Content (Syllabus)
The studio seeks to investigate the possibilities of a common conceptual and methodological framework, within which urban and architectural design and landscape planning scales and time-spans are addressed in tandem, with a view to re-negotiating social and spatial urban identities. It aims at the identification, investigation and design constitution of contemporary socio-spatial identities within the condition of urban sprawl. The suburban areas are enhanced as dynamic, multi-faceted and mutated fields of social, environmental and social dimensions. Personal and collective forces apply local and global patterns of developments which continuously transforms them the urban edge by means of dis-continuities, ruptures, displacements, contradictions, uncertainties. Dispersed urbanized areas at the edge of the city are to be rediscovered. In such transitional places, urban boundaries - internal and external, natural and constructed, physical and non-physical, social or environmental - are negotiated. Thus, it’s the studio’s objective to investigate design strategies, combining different layers of intervention that could produce forms of urbanity or create diffuse or off-centre centralities, re-instigating or unravelling different identities of the place.
The studio involves in situ survey and analysis of different qualities and identities of the place in question, and the subsequent drafting of scenarios of spatial and social transformations and architectural interventions (scales 1:5000 – 1:200).
The course teaching team considers the studio as a framework of design response to the contemporary urban challenges in the condition of crisis, a sequel of activity in former diploma studios: ‘Transitional Places’ – ‘Negotiating urban boundaries’.
