Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will learn from the perspective of medicinal chemistry about how metals interact with the biological systems, how to apply chelation therapy against metal intoxication, how platinum anticancer and gold antirheumatic drugs are synthesized and work. Also they will learn about the properties (physical and biological) and general applications of MRI contrast agents and diagnostic radiopharmaceuticals.At the same time students will learn from the perspective of medicinal chemistry about the role of hormone from chemical , biological and therapeutical point of view. Also they will learn the strategy for the design, synthesis and structure-activity relationships of synthetic analogs of hormones.
Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to hormones. Classification of hormones and their studies from chemical, biological and therapeutical points of view. Design, synthesis, qualitative and quantitative evaluation of hormones, structure-activity relationships. Antagonist of hormones. Metabolism and mechanism of action. Role in the organism . Hormones as contraceptives. Insulin, calcitonin, hormones of hypophysis and hypothalamus.Role of hormones and metals in the biological systems. Introduction to coordination compounds. Metal compounds in the biological systems. Application of metal ligands in chelation therapy. Osteoporosis: design, synthesis and structure-activity relationships of biphosphonates.Platinum anticancer compounds, gold anti-rheumatic compounds(design, synthesis and structure-activity relationship). Metal compounds as diagnostics: Principles of design. MRI contrast agents, radiopharmaceuticals.
