Learning Outcomes
Students who successfully completed the lesson are able to read the classical Arabic Quranic language, understand and translate part of the text into the Greek language, perceive and know the interpretive issues concerning the Quran.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The lesson heals the tafsir, the special branch of knowledge of Islamic Qur'anic sciences (al-'ulūm al-qurāniyya), which deals with the interpretation of the Quran. After a necessary introduction to the Koranic text, the most important commentators / interpreters (mufassirūn) of the Koran, from the first centuries of Islamic history to the 15th century, are presented. Subjects of the Qur'an are then studied and analyzed in the light of the so-called "classical tafsir", that is, the well-known explanatory interpretation and commentary of the Koranic text.
At the end of the first and second semester classical class class students will be able to assess their importance for interpreting the Quran and understand how it works and how the "science of interpreting the Quran" was applied by Muslim scholars of the 8th-15th century.
