Course Content (Syllabus)
The aim of the workshop is to provide a practical introduction to different approaches to the representation of music creation in documentary filmmaking, as mixed groups of three students from the Department of Film Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki are invited to create a series of short music documentaries. The topics are about contemporary musicians of Thessaloniki and are chosen by the participants of the workshop.
At the beginning there will be an introduction to different genres of the contemporary "music scene" of the city and their characteristics. This is followed by a presentation of basic theoretical considerations about the perception of music composition and performance by the general public and the education/formation of the audience. In addition, case studies of music documentaries and an anthology of different ways of representing music creation on the film screen are also referred to.
The themes are then selected and the scripted treatments of the films under construction are developed. During this time research and filmmaking methodologies are presented. At the same time, case-studies are examined with regard to the script approach and the creative use of techniques of the expository mode, e.g. with interviews, archival material, etc., as well as techniques of the observational mode. The exploration of theoretical concerns and artistic approaches stems from the questions posed by and directly linked to the construction of each film.
The editing of each film is done in at least two stages in order to provide feedback. The films of the workshop that are deemed adequate are screened as part of the in-edit music documentary festival in April.
