Course Content (Syllabus)
The course examines the expansion of European power to the rest of the world from the period of the Discoveries to Decolonisation after the Second World War. It will discuss the different forms that European colonialism took; its consequences for colonized and European peoples and states; the factor of economic international economyq the ideological aspects of the phenomenon; and historiographical approaches about colonization and decolonization. Colonialism and imperialism: concepts, definitions and theoretical approaches. Discoveries and the first colonial powers: Spain, Portugal. The emergence of new colonial powers (Holland, France, England, England, Russia) and colonial competition. The anti-colonial revolutions in North and South America. The role of the industrial revolution and the 'new capitalism'. The demographic factor. Ideological aspects of colonialism and imperialism. The British Empire. The new imperialism in the 19th century. The struggle for Africa. The two world wars and their impact on the colonies. Decolonisation. Imperialism and neocolonialism in the modern world. Conclusions.
