Learning Outcomes
After the completion of this course, a student will be able to: - recognize the concepts of climate change, greenhouse effect, acid rain. - understand the principles of air and water pollution - acknowledge the wastewater treatment processes - design a wastewater treatment plant - estimate the best dimensions for the corresponding tanks - have the knowledge of the limitations in the construction of such hydraulic works - know the pollution limits at the outlet of the WWTP
Course Content (Syllabus)
Pollution and environmental protection. Greenhouse effect, acid rain. Air pollution, suspended particulate matter, smog. Toxic substances, asbestos, lead, dioxins. Water quality. Eutrophication. Introduction to urban wastewater treatment. Environmental biochemistry and biotechnology. Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of wastewater. Mechanical treatment (screens, grit chambers, sedimentation basins). Biological treatment (activated sludge bioreactors, trickling filters). Natural wastewater treatment systems. Chemical treatment. Disinfection and disposal. Biosolids treatment (thickening, stabilization and dewatering. Reuse of treated wastewater and biosolids.
