Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will possess broad knowledge of the scientific fields that investigate emotions, as well as foundational knowledge of research methods in this domain. More specifically, upon completion, students will be able to: critically compare key theories; describe the role of various brain structures in emotional experience, along with the contributions of neurotransmitters and neuroendocrine systems; identify profiles of impaired emotional processing in anxiety/depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, and related conditions; and explain how culture, social context, developmental trajectory, individual differences, and cognitive mechanisms influence the expression, recognition, and regulation of emotions.
Course Content (Syllabus)
The course systematically explores emotions as biological, cognitive, and sociocultural phenomena. It combines historical perspectives with contemporary neuroscientific approaches to understand the nature of emotions, the neural networks that support them, and the ways they are expressed or disrupted in neurological and psychiatric conditions.
